How due dates work in pregnancy

A full-term pregnancy typically lasts 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), or 38 weeks (266 days) from conception. Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters:

  • First trimester (weeks 1-13): Your baby's heart begins beating, and major organs form. This is when most pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and fatigue occur.
  • Second trimester (weeks 14-27): Your baby grows rapidly, you may feel the first kicks, and many early symptoms subside. Often called the “golden period” of pregnancy.
  • Third trimester (weeks 28-40): Your baby gains weight and prepares for birth. You may experience Braxton Hicks contractions and increased discomfort.
